Stouphill Gate is a traditional old Cumbrian farmstead, and the holiday accommodation has been formed from the older parts of the property retaining much of the original character whilst benefiting from all of the modern conveniences.
Guests for the Cottage will be occupying the oldest part of the property thought to date back over 250 years but this could be nearer 300 years! Many original features have been retained along with the character - unfortunately this does include the old stone stairs to the two first floor bed rooms. These stairs are an intrinsic feature of the property but are not recommended for any one unsteady on their legs. Children cope very well its the elderly who struggle! One of the adjacent B&B rooms (one of which is on the ground floor) could also be hired with the cottage to provide additional sleeping space - and an extra bath room!
The kitchen is kitted out with all the usual conveniences including a dish washer (so you can spend your time enjoying you holiday not washing-up). The Cottage has its own private garden area with table and chairs (BBQ!) and has use of the laundry facilities, playing field etc. It is however the views which set Stouphill Gate apart, all the Cottage windows look out towards Mallerstang Edge, Wild Boar Fell and the Stennerskeugh Clouds while all around is silence and tranquillity as befits its rural setting.
Stouphill Gate has been recommended in the 'Hidden Guide to the Lake District and Cumbria', published by Travel Publishing Ltd, as part of their Hidden Places of Britain Series. Only one holiday cottage/bed & breakfast establishment is chosen (by the visiting public) for each of the areas these guides cover and Stouphill Gate is the recommended choice for the Upper Eden area.
Evening meals are available in the local pubs, the closest is within walking distance. and Kirkby Stephen with its fish & chip shops, pubs etc is only five miles away.
