Weasdale Nurseries - Newbiggin on Lune

At 850ft elevation (260m), Weasdale Nurseries are one of the highest tree nurseries in the UK.

Situated on the northern flanks of the Howgills, they have been growing hardy trees and shrubs there since 1950 and have been mail-order specialists from the very beginning. Their unique packaging techniques - employed to ensure the safe passage of their plants to all corners of the UK and Europe - have achieved almost legendary status and will still prompt many letters of appreciation from customers new and old alike.

Weasdale Nurseries continue to grow their stock in the open ground (ie not in containers) for supply bare-rooted in the dormant season - nature's own time for planting - from November to April/May. Customers are very welcome to collect plants directly from the nurseries, but will need to place an order in advance, so that the order can be dug up and prepared prior to collection.

The Weasdale catalogue is also one of the best in the business, a very effective shop window for their extensive range of around 1000 different trees and shrubs that are grown there.

Customers are very welcome to visit the nurseries and see the plants in the 40+ acres of nursery beds. In quieter periods, same-day collection of an order may be possible but, ideally, a few days' notice is preferred. A walk around the beautifully planted grounds is very rewarding at most times of the year and will, in all probability, involve a close encounter with a Red Squirrel or two. Wellies are essential and, regrettably, being a working nursery more akin to a farm than a shop or garden centre, this is not a site that is easily accessed by those with any difficulties in walking.

The office opening-hours are 8:30-5:30pm Monday to Friday. If wishing to visit at a weekend, please phone ahead during the week for further advice.
